Sonic – History

Sonic Corp., commonly known as Sonic is a Drive-in restaurant with its headquarter based in Oklahoma City. Sonic comes under Inspire Brands, the parent company which also owns Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.it was first founded by Troy N. Smith Sr. and his business partner in 1953 in a land that had a log house and a walk-up root beer stand named as the Top Hat. Smith made it a drive-in after his trip to Louisiana where he found restaurants using speakers to take orders. He established a layout for controlled parking with a wired intercom system in the parking lot. This idea boosted his business and made this franchise famous.

Charles Woodrow Pappe, an entrepreneur, met with Smith and Pappe and negotiated for the first franchise location in Woodward, Oklahoma, in 1956. By 1958, there were two more drive-ins built.

The name of Top Hat was changed to Sonic in 1959, as the name was already a trademark owned by another company. In 1983, C. Stephen Lynn was hired as president and he started local advertising of the franchises. In late 2010, Sonic ended its relationship with their advertising agency and in early 2011, the San Francisco-based Goodby Silverstein and Partners were named as the new creative agency for the company.

Afterward, in 2018, Atlanta-based Inspire Brands acquired the ownership of Sonic Drive-In and made it its subsidiary restaurant.
